Arts and Crafts Projects for Kids of All Ages

Homemade Play Dough

Almost everyone has spent some time in their lives playing with and sculpting masterpieces with dough of some sort. Often the store bought containers get left open or the lid gets lost and eventually the dough dries up. You don’t have pack the kids in the car to head to the store to get more.

Why not make your own? It’s easy to make and you can experiment with colors and textures. Not only is it a great craft medium but also can improve motor skills, hand eye coordination, creativity, and more.

All you need is a cup of water with food coloring in it, a few tablespoons of vegetable oil and cream of tartar, a cup of flour and 1/2 a cup of salt. Mix them together in a sauce pan over medium heat until the consistency of play dough. After it cools off you can have hours of fun creating your own statues and designs. Cookie cutters and a rolling pin can add to the fun. When you’re done store your play dough in an air tight container so it’s soft enough to use in the future.

Homemade Lava Lamp

Making a homemade lava lamp isn’t just fun, it can also be a science experiment lesson. They are great to make and to enjoy afterwards and you don’t need any special ingredients or expensive supplies to see the magic.

Most of the supplies you’ll need can be found in your kitchen. You’ll need a bottle as the body of your lava lamp. To fill the lamp you’ll need vegetable oil, baking soda, vinegar, food coloring, a small cup and a spoon to mix things up. A small dollar store flat light to sit your bottle on when done will turn it into a lamp when you’re done.

First thing you’ll need to do is add three or four tablespoons of baking soda to your bottle. After the baking soda you’ll want to fill the bottle 2/3’s full with vegetable oil. The oil should sit on top of the baking soda, not mixed in with it. In the small cup you have on hand you’ll want to add some vinegar and a few drops of food coloring.

Now you’ll want to slowly and carefully add the ingredients in the small cup to your bottle.

Voila, a homemade lava lamp.

Tie Dye Shirts or Pillow Cases

There are lots of beautiful creations you can make with tie dye. Whether you want to make colorful shirts to wear or turn a plain white pillow case into a colorful and beautiful design, tie dye can give any plain material a wonderful makeover.

If you don’t have dye already you can find a tie dye kit for sale for a reasonable price that will have all the supplies you need except the material or shirt.

You’ll need dye of various colors, elastic bands, squeeze bottles or bowls to put the dye and water in. You can divide the shirt or case into scrunched balls held by the elastics. Then add dye to each balled up section of the shirt. Leave it until the dye sets and the material dries. Then remove the elastic bands and see the patterns and designs you’ve created.

If you have markers or paint pens that work on material you can then add your own words or picture on the front. Tie Dye creations make great gifts for young and old.

Epoxy Resin Arts and Crafts Projects

Epoxy resin is a versatile medium that allows you to make everything from table tops to earrings, coasters to breakfast in bed trays. You can even create your own beads and medallions and make your own jewelry creations.

Epoxy resin is not something you just hand to the kids to take to the craft room and work by themselves. It is extremely important that it’s handled safely and doesn’t touch any skin while setting. You’ll need silicone molds to form the project. There are tons of options out there and you can get a whole tray of various shaped molds for less than $20 at most craft stores

If you have a particular shape that you want to make it is possible to make your own mold with a silicone compound. You’ll need to let the resin sit for at least a day or two so this isn’t a project you can do an hour before you give it as a gift.

Resin dries clear but you can add color or even dried flowers after the resin is poured into the molds. Again be sure to use tweezers and to have gloves on to protect your hands from getting any corrosive resin on them.
