Snowfall and gusty winds as winter blast sweeps through south-east Australia

A winter blast continues to sweep through New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania, bringing snowfall and gusty winds.

Strong wind warnings are in place today from the NSW Mid North Coast right down to the Eden Coast near the Victorian border.

Damaging winds averaging 80km/h to 90km/h with peak gusts up to 130km/h are bringing blizzard-like conditions and fresh dumps of snow to the alpine areas.

The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service recommends that back country travel be postponed until conditions improve.

Temperatures are expected to drop below average across south-east parts of Australia, with Melbourne set to shiver through 7C days this week.

The Bureau of Meteorology expects Melbourne to endure nine days in a row of maximum temperatures three degrees colder than normal for this time of the year.

Gusty showers and thunderstorms are possible for parts of Tasmania over the coming days as a cold front moves across the Bass Strait.
